Additional factiodal data point:
We have a 8" "flue" -- the outside chimney about 16' in height plus
the port through the house wall. Our stovepipe is 6" dia, ca. 30"
vertical from the stove, one elbow and ca. 48" horizontal to the
wall, and it's stainless. That combination of diameters has worked
fine for many years. I do *not* think I'd want to go with a 6" flue
for the chimney itself.
The stainless stovepipe is a product sold as "flue liner" for people
who want to upgrade old chimneys lacking ceramic liner, e.g. for
putting a modern wood-burning heater stove into a 100 year old
fireplace. I've eliminated the twist-lock joints for our purpose. The
stovepipes are over a decade old and show no deterioration despite
periodic vigorous application of a needle scaler when cleaning.
