Bruce, I don't know exactly what you are looking for but it MIGHT be a 
RIVET NUT.

I used several of these last year to attach a forged grille to a steel 
door with a glass insert.  The metal door had nothing inside around the 
glass to attach the grille to.  The RIVET NUT was the solution.  They 
are not cheap but it worked.  The hand tool and a pocket full of rivet 
nut inserts cost me around $150.  I used the 3/8" size but they come in 
various sizes, both steel and aluminum. Google Rivet Nut. I got mine 
from Fastenal.
