I think permalac sounds like a good way to go. 
If they could live with the appearance, that two part resin that they coat wooden hatchcovers with to make them into tabletops in fish and chips restaurants would work and last, as well, but its thick and goopy.

I have had a bunch of stuff clear powdercoated, but I would not recommend that for this job- its ok for smaller diameter stuff, furniture bases and such, but since its basically impossible to remove or touch up, its a bad idea for a tabletop.
