At the Hereford conference in '80, the German guys in $1,000 suits
were pontificating that you couldn't possibly become a blacksmith if
you didn't start training or apprenticeship in your teens. Some of the
working British smiths said they'd started at 14.

One of the official conference demonstrators, a Brit who definitely
didn't wear a $1,000 suit, was asked how old he was when he started.
After a long grin, he said, "Fortyyyyyy-threee."
