Forgot to add the moral to the story here;
When you see rich brown smoke....
don't add oxygen!

Al's was similarly sized, a beehive shaped kiln, with 2 burners.
In the heat to the summer, when he wasn't firing, he would clean it out and sleep in it cause it stayed cool.
One day i was over visiting and he had it stuffed with greenware.
He had been candeling all the previous day to finish drying it out and begin the heat ramp slowly.
There was a greasy, smoky, yellow flame guttering away for 24 hours.
When Al fired up one of the vacuum cleaner blowers, there was a pause,
and the kiln blew up. It threw bricks 100' away and removed all the hair on Al's face.
Al got up looking like he was in blackface, staggered to the unheated hot tub
and only came up for air for an hour. A few abrasions and some red skin, but no blisters resulted.

One of my professors lived on Staten Island and build a beautiful and rather large oil-fired kiln. As pointed out elsewhere you could have probably gotten a 1/2 a VW into it. It was fired by FOUR oil burners and seemed to do the job.
