When you see rich brown smoke....
don't add oxygen!

One of my professors lived on Staten Island and build a beautiful and rather large oil-fired kiln.  As pointed out elsewhere you could have probably gotten a 1/2 a VW into it.  It was fired by FOUR oil burners and seemed to do the job.
