Injecting oxygen into the air inlet stream provides you with a hotter forge gas inlet temperature.  Since air is approximately 78% nitrogen,  it has to heated up by the burning fuel.  Adding oxygen reduces the amount of nitrogen to be heated and thus the inlet gas to the forge is hotter.  Easy example is the temperature of a handyman's propane torch versus a propane/oxygen cutting torch.
