Just read Andy's "advice for a beginner" and agree completely.
If you can master the concepts as Andy outlines, you will form a
foundation from which you can add other skills. Even more importantly,
you won't be jumping in over your head in the beginning (skill level
wise) and by focusing on the basics will eliminate a lot of the
frustration experienced by novices by trying to do things that are above
their "pay grade" so to speak.
The best thing for you (based on what you listed, equipment-wise) is
that you can do all this learning with what you have now. No need to go
out and spend money you may not have to spend on "boy toys". All that
rebar is great for practice. Take your time and learn.
I will suggest that you rent, buy or borrow one of Uri Hofi's CD's on
hammer control. IMO Hofi is a master at moving metal and using a hammer.
