[TheForge] A different needle question

I read about this same technique for wound flat springs of many types, from
clocks to firearms to bell mechanisms. I don't remember the book even though
I can visualize the text and illustrations in my mind's eye. Heat to cherry
red, (low orange) water quench, lay in a shallow ceramic dish in a little
oil, light the oil and it's done when it's cool. As I recall the
illustration the oil depth was less than half the width of the spring strip.

I don't think that I've seen this one on this question.

I have not tried this, but guys that build flint locks tell me that they
temper the springs by putting them in a shallow dish, covering the spring
with oil and lighting it. By the time the oil burns off the spring has
reached the proper temper.
