I've seen that before.
If anyone goes to design themselves a hammer, keep in mind that you're
MUCH better off to pre-load a light-weight springs a LOT, rather than
using a heavy-weight spring for holding the hammer up. That way when
you bring the hammer down, you're fighting only a light spring, not a
heavy one. The pre-loading provides the force needed to keep the
hammer up with gravity pulling it down. If the return stroke is not
fast enough, use a extra "kickback" spring that only engages at the
bottom of the stroke -- where it has minimal effect to brake the
hammer motion due to the high momentum of the hammer at that point.
Some adjustability of the last may be needed if work of different
heights is to be used.
