[TheForge] Jim and Susan Stapleford / John Olsen

I just read in the NBA's newsletter of the deaths of Jim and Susan
Stapleford, and also of John Olsen.  Some of you may have known these
folks.  I hadn't seen any not of their deaths here, which is why I'm
posting this.

I knew John only as another face at Ashokan -- somebody I swapped lies
with at the tailgate sale.

I knew Jim Stapleford a decade or more ago, when Jim was editor of the
NBA newsletter, "Fire and Iron".  He and his wife were fairly well
known in crafting circles, as is attested by this video.

friend of theirs while flying to the west coast about 5 years ago --
the woman in the seat next to mine.

The Staplefords must have known about CO and its hazards, but
succumbed to it anyway.  The generator should never have been in the
basement, at least not without a flue or other means to keep the
exhaust out of the house.

I came down a bit hard on a friend who had been boiling water after
Hurricane Sandy to heat her apartment.  I had to point out that
combustion products NOT carried away up a flue were liable to poison
her.

Respect CO -- and combustion exhaust in general.  It can kill you.
