saying a "jet lathe" is like saying a "ford car".
Jet has imported lathes from at least 4 different countries, over a period of 40 years, and there are literally dozens of different models, probably 20 or more different manufacturers. So there is a wide variety of types, sizes, and construction techniques.

on page 36, you can see there is a hidden set screw with lock nut that holds the quill in.

Perhaps yours has something like this?

Sometimes these screws are located so you cant even see them unless you yank the tailstock off, and turn it upside down.
