That's a damp sand symptom hereabouts Robert.
Mike, if you have to go to town, there are commercial, 2 part , bolt on fittings just for that.
Reis's TIP tip is a good one too.

flowing before opening up the valve to the sand it fills the hose up with 
sand and plugs everything up.  Maybe that is what is happening and then when 
the presure builds up it blows the hose.

It may also be that your compresor has too much presure for the conections 
and needs to be dialed back a little.
