Mike,

I have a pair of boots like that.  They were very expensive so I hate to 
throw them out, but the only way I can ware them is if I put athletic tape 
on the tops of my toes. I've considered taking them to a shoe repair shop 
and having the steel caps removed.

No idea too hare-brained. I once made an adapter for a portapower to
expand the steel caps on a new pair of boots that turned out to pinch
my toes. (Didn't work; the caps were too springy.)
