might well be correct.  That the spring appears to extend out beyond
the tup is consistent with that idea. A nice solution if so.

The Palmer hammer had a flexible joint in the spring's
centre-mount. It can be seen (if not too clearly) here:

The whole spring can move a little fore and aft on pivots held by two
massive cheek pieces.

And it didn't totally solve the problem: The ram guide and adjustment
shims were worn such that there was no way to get a good adjustment.
Either the ram was too tight or it shucked for and aft in operation.
I never got keen enough to take tedious measurements and have the ram
and shims lightly milled.  I don't think the present owner has,
either.

Looks like just a sliding fit, steel on steel, doesn't it?
