Thanks CHuck, I have heard of this great virtue in ATF. I am now
thinking the set screw broke in the hole, so the tailstock comes off and
I will inspect and drill if necessary. It is a structurally simple
device and it is clear I have exhausted all other possibilities. Given
the screw has a broken end, I do believe I may now have the answer.
I will let you all know once I check this out.
