They are the voice of vested interests who are profiting enormously, just as things are.
Any change costs them money or entails risk. Things their bank accounts abhor.
That is big money speaking and it is shortsighted and amoral.
Do cows once again graze where your decommissioned nuke plant once stood Dann?

Speaking of liabilities of cheap nuclear electricity...

My COOP Electric Company, then based in my home town of Thompson, Iowa was
a partial owner of our Dairyland G & T COOP that took over a Federal La
Crosse Wisconsin Nuclear plant. I believe for the initial cost of the
transfer from the Feds to the "Private Sector" was one ($1) USD in 1973.

This plant was officially decommissioned in 1987. We electrical user
members are still paying millions of dollars in the current rate
structure / cost of electricity for that decommissioned / defunct plant.

Thank heavens that there was none of the Fukushima and Chernoble kind of
events that render surrounding areas un-inhabitable for generations, and
increased radiation risks for many more miles around that are still
considered "inhabitable".

Nuclear will probably remain a component of our national / international
electric grid as long as man uses electricity. Regardless of innovative
drilling / mining techniques, coal, gas, and oil reserves will eventually
be exhausted. It is pragmatic to look to "Green" solutions like Wind,
Solar, Hydro, etc. What I don't understand is why or how the "Think
Tanks" for the ultra conservative "right" can logically seek to debunk and
defund research into advancement for the "green" solutions, while
subsidizing the dinasaur driven established oil companies.
