Stake, yes.
I defer to everybody else who has experience with anvil repair as I
have none. So I haven't tried to improve my anvil (although it
probably has better edges than James described.)
I have a steel block about 3"x3"x7" (scrap of some kind, nothing I've
done has dinged it visibly) with very nice sharp edges to which I've
welded a stake that fits my main anvil. When I need a sharp edge for
a drop-set or whatever, the stake goes in and I use that.
The only anvil welding I've done is to weld a strap across the
fracture on a Hall anvil with the heel broken off at the hardy hole.
With the strap in place, it holds stake tools just fine. No worries
there about softening or otherwise damaging the face.
