the other definition has to do with the actual material.
wrought iron, is basically iron with little carbon in it but with
inclusions of fiberous slag. One close inspection or under a microscope
you can see the fiberous slag filaments along with the iron crystals.
wrought iron the material generally lasts a long time because the of
fiberous slag inclusions. old wrought iron horseshoes tend to look like
wood.

from the oxford english dictionary:

noun
[mass noun]
a tough malleable form of iron suitable for forging or rolling rather
than casting, obtained by puddling pig iron while molten. It is nearly
pure but contains some slag in the form of filaments.


wrought is the archaic past tense of work. so today wrought iron items
general means their are made from mild steel and worked by hand.
