Last I knew of the Russian River was in 1980 when a bunch of 
environmentalists drove pitons into a low rock face and chained 
themselves to it in protest of damming.  I left before finding out 
whether they drowned or where cut loose and forced to eat hamburgers and 
fries as punishment.

I take it the river had indeed been dammed?
