[TheForge] anvil question

Isn't 7018 a bit harder than 6010? 6011 is the same steel as 6010 and
works better with an AC buzz box but there is 7018 made for AC. I just
used about 30# of 7018 on a friend's tire hammer and it seems to work
fine if run a bit hotter. The anvil is 2' of train boxcar axel welded to
a 6"x12" block of steel (3 12"x 6"x 2" slabs welded together.

E-6010 would be a better choice than hardfacing rod. what makes
hardfacing
rod abrasion resistant is the tungsten in the matrix and does nothing
for an
anvil except make it really REALLY hard to grind to shape.
Buildup or filler rod for use before hardfacing is a LOT better. It
flows
well and is far more deflection and impact resistant. Most can be
hardened
to around r55-60 which is good for forging and is easily ground to
finished
shape/contour.
Hardfacing rod is limited to one pass two if you can hit the second
while
the first is still at or above orange heat. Multiple passes causes it to
spall and it doesn't bond to itself particularly well. Any flex in the
subsurface will result in hardfacing checking and eventually spalling.
That's my experience with the stuff over 20 years rebuilding our drill
steel
and experimenting.
