My understanding about older blowers is that they were meant to leak oil. They did not have gaskets or seals.

Subject: [TheForge] Buffalo brand forge blower

I am rebuilding a small Buffalo forge blower.  This is one of the small
stamped metal housing units.  It is in good condition and coming
together nicely.  The question I have is that the seam around the gear
box, was it originally filled with some form of sealer or caulk?  When I
opened this one up, it was full of grease, no surprise there, but it has
one if the spring and ball oil ports on the housing which leads me to
believe they intended gear oil in stead of grease in side.  This brings
us back to the first question as oil would leak out of the seam where
the gearbox covers over lap with or with out sealant.  (too many years
trying to get old HD primary not to leak not to know this) Does anyone
know what was used for lubrication in the small blowers?  Thanks for
your help.
