Might have been red lead (litharge) and glycerin sealant... we used to
use that stuff for pipe joints years ago, and it holds well, but sets up
hard as a rock. It is a great sealant for hydrocarbons.

I know most folks are deathly afraid of lead... as am I when it is
directed towards me at velocities over 30 fps or more. I used lead as a
plumber for 40 years, had a heavy metal test done 5 or so years ago and
show no more than average amounts. Just don't lick your fingers or drink
soluble lead salts.
I don't know what oil they had used originally, but I use a 50/50 blend
of 30 WT and bar oil. I sealed the seam on the gear box with automotive
grade silicone engine sealant. It sealed the case, but the fill level
cannot be any higher than the lowest shaft, of course.
The 'grease' inside might have been oil at one time... it polymerizes to
sludge given enough time.
