Bob, I have two suggestions (for what it's worth)
1. Take your two wheels to your friendly local (small) machine shop.
They will be able to align, weld and turn smooth the two into one.
2. Try using a heavy piece of cloth or canvas between your dies and the
work piece when using the press to form a bowl.
