Understand what you meant, but technically you have a hot and a neutral
alternating back and forth. In a properly operating system the ground
is always at ground potential all of the time. Also as a point of
interest, the North American system got rationalized in the 1950's so
the nominal voltages are 120/240 though due to the realities of
delivering power, there is a wider acceptable range.
