For all the good it does your cousin after the fact.

I have saved my own bacon twice with my pistol in my 30s and possibly 
that of another when I was 19.

On two occasions groups of "tough guys" alerted me to the fact thta they 
sought to do me grave injury or kill me.  Once in lower Manhattan and 
once in South River NJ.  On both occasions I put my pistol in their 
general direction, ordered them to "go away" and in both cases they did.

When I was 19 I was waiting for a light on Pacific Coast Highway across 
from Vasek Polak Porsche Audi.  A few doors down was a bar wherefrom a 
man and woman emerged, the man beating her with some vigor.  As they 
crossed, he kept slapping and punching her and was crying out and asked 
for help.  I suggested to the man he leave her alone.  He turned to me, 
threatened to kill me and I produced a 9mm pistol and let him know I 
would shoot him stone dead unless he immediately started running away 
from me.  He complied.

In all three cases, no shots fired, nobody injured, save some egos and a 
young girl who'd been beaten enough to make it noteworthy.

Had I not been armed, the woman would probably have been beaten 
severely, possibly murdered.  The fuutball players from Columbia U. may 
have beaten my ass something terrible, judging by their talk, and the 
guys from the biker bar ("Gatsby's") I suspect may have murdered me.

Anyone suggesting I was ever obliged to expose myself to such treatment 
for the sake of the comfort level of others has got more than one screw 
loose.  And yes, I carried ILLEGALLY in all three cases and make no 
bones about it.  I ask no permission to exercise my right to defend 
myself and others, as well as property.
