Then why didn't this argument succeed before the Supreme Court? The well
regulated militia is window dressing, the set up for the part that says "the
right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed". That's
the meat of the matter.

Again it is about providing an augment to the standing army, the tyrant they
were worried about was King George it is not about personal protection from
your neighbor. We never faced the full British strength, in both the
Revolutionary War and the War of 1812 European nations, especially France
and Spain played a decisive role in occupying the major portion of Britain's
land and naval forces.
