Bruce --

For most work, propane is cheaper and adequate -- bit sloppier cuts
and no real difference in just heating. For gas welding, propane
fails compared to acetylene (IMHO, i.e., I can gas weld with
acetylene and not so much with propane). Conversion require a
different regulator (adjustable LP one with gauge - identical to the
ones I use on gas forges) - tips are different but readily
available. Hoses seem not to care.
