Though I have one or more torches, I've never used acetylene, so don't
miss it myself, but I wouldn't mind haveing some heating devices more
efficient than a MAPP gas torch.
Do any of you have experience converting an acetylene torch to use with propane?
Quothe Jonathan Nedbor:
"There are several alternatives to acetylene for most cutting, heating
and brazing or soldering applications. You will need to inquire at
your local welding supply to find out what you can do to switch over
to these gases. BUT, don’t expect them to work for welding!
"For heating and cutting, Liquid Propane (LP) may be the most
practical: it is the easiest to change your equipment over to, it is
readily available and relatively cheap.
"Another alternative fuel is propylene, which also works well for
heating and cutting.
"StarFlame C, from Praxair, is a mix of hydrocarbons in propane. It
works well and in some ways is better than acetylene.
"But be prepared, the conversion to these alternative gases can
include changing your tips, hoses and regulators. "
