I am a bargain hunter, but I think back on all the money that I've spent
on computers, laptops, cell phones, that the initial investment / value
shrinks to zero over time.

Are you a member of the Carolinas ABANA group?
http://www.abana.org/affiliates/affiliate_list.shtml

There might be some one in that group that lives very close to you, who
would take you under their wing?

Money that I spent on blacksmith equipment has always appreciated in
value. If you buy wisely, I can't see how you could lose by buying the
best anvil that you can afford. My caviat to that is.. once, I saw a
couple guys go bananas at an estate auction, and took an old really
abused / beat up anvil to a price that would come close to paying for a
new steel anvil.

"Kane and Sons Blacksmithing" might not be too far from you that you
could make a road trip of discovery.

Centaur Forge ran a special on new anvils last fall that made me really
think about trading up from my antique anvil that was my first love.

When you get on the email lists for Centaur Forge, they notify you when
there is a sale.
