Unfortunately, none of those things seem to work in Vegas. Right now it's
even hard to come by RR track or fork lift forks. One guy was trying to sell
tines for $300 or more per pair.

Matt;
Contrary to popular opinion, RR track makes a lousy anvil.
The extra heavy RR track used in HD switches is a bit better.
Using either heavy Track or the heaviest shaft you can snag...
Plant it upright in the ground and forge on the butt end.
That way you have the mass directly under the hammer
where it needs to be, for effective forging.
A lot of horizontal mass , like in RR track anvils, is good for jewelry
forging.
Go to your local BS group's meets and check the tailgate sales...talk to old
rural folks,
put an ad in the local cheap classifieds and craigs' list. There are anvils
around, unclaimed..
You just have to out-sleuth all the other anvil seekers.
It generally takes some persistence to find yr anvil...
but then, it sure helps to be stubborn in this medium.
