I have used silvadene (1% silver sulfadiazine cream) for years.
Sometime back, I was getting low, and went to the VA. I asked if I
could get a prescription to be used on the outside (Non VA). They
asked whether I was currently suffering from a burn. I said no, but
that occasionally I work with very hot metal, and I wanted some to
replenish my first aid supplies. Their reply was 1) that since I was
not currently burned, they could not prescribe me any, and 2) they
could not provide a prescription for use outside the VA system. So I
went home, and began to scratch my head whether I knew any doctors
that I could prevail upon to give me a 'scrip. Lo and behold, about
two weeks later, I got this 14-oz jar of sulfadiazine cream in the
mail from the VA! I still haven't asked what made them change their
minds!
