Andy,
Remember when President Bush and his Republican Congress gave bottom line
tax credits that essentialy made it free to buy a Humvee?
I bet you didn't think it was robbing Americans giving a $100,000 tax
credit to "small business" that bought 3 ton gas guzzler SUV's.
That certainly helped balance the budget of Big Oil, even if it worked to
run up the US National Debt, and worsen the balance of trade.

In North Iowa, we get snow in Winter, still I wondered at the time why
local Medical professionals, lawyers, realtors, farmers, jumped in mass to
new fancy big SUV 's. My tax lawyer explained that they did it to get
that tax credit. My brother was working down in Key West Florida at the
time .. where they never have to worry about snow, mud, or ice .. but my
brother said that HUMVEES and other big SUVs were predominate.
Note that this was a $100,000 TAX CREDIT, which deducted from the bottom
line of taxes that you owe.
Compare that with a $2,000 TAX DEDUCTION for hybrids, which only reduced
the pretax income.
