Don't knock winter! I'm enjoying the snow here on the east coast.
(I hate to say "Jersey Shore" anymore. They should rename that TV
show "The Bennies") The snow from the blizzard of '11 never melted
off, and we've had some light snowfalls since to keep it very
XC-skiable.

I was just in the process of rearranging my shed, and had to run a
cord to cut some metal shelf stanchions a couple inches shorter with
the angle grinder, when the blizzard hit. I can get out there now in
a pinch, but it's not first choice of places for doing chores. So
I've been doing mostly indoor stuff, including the garage shop, which
is just across the patio from the house. I've gotten some good
cleaning-out done, but there's 30 years of accumulation to deal with!

If you guys haven't heard of "hackerspaces", look them up:
http://hackerspaces.org/wiki/List_of_Hacker_Spaces
"Hacker", here, does not imply someone who illegally breaks into
someone else's computer an steals things or plants viruses. Rather,
it means someone who takes things apart (hardware or software) and
puts it together differently. Some folks are getting sensitive to the
ill-repute connoted by "hacker" and want to call their spaces
"makerspaces", but all this is a tempest in a teapot.

The important thing is this is a bunch of extremely creative people
doing interesting, if useless, things with technology. That describes
a lot of us too, doesn't it? I've started interacting with two
"local" hackerspaces and they're delighted to be in touch with someone
with a vastly different body of knowledge than theirs. I would like
to start a hackerspace nearer to me, and there is a possibility of
doing so, but we're going to need to collect up about a dozen
like-minded folks before we can get things rolling.

Visit the websites of these places and have a look at the incredible
nonsense they engage in.
