I used to own a house and a studio in Los Angeles- and It was  very specific in the deeds to both that I did not own any mineral rights. 
The entire LA basin is a huge oil field, and NOBODY owns their mineral rights.
The oil companies bought most of it by the 20's.
They slant drill, though, they dont come and drill in your yard.
About six blocks down Pico Blvd from my place was a 6 story building with no windows and no roof- it was simply a fence around the drill rig, which slant drilled about 2 or 3 miles in every direction.
LA is scattered with these disguised drill rigs, and then they build little shacks around the pump jacks.
