Nothing wrong with using wedges but lots of folks now days have had much 
longer term results with using something like JB weld to glue in the handle. 
Also some folks have use some type of elastic compound that reduces some of 
the shock transmision to the handle -- Hofi has used this.

Better living thorugh chemistry.

What's wrong with using wedges?  The classic handle hole in a hammer
head is hourglass-shaped, and one uses wedges to expand the upper end
to fit it.
