[TheForge] need help on a project. ( Knife steel)

Beth at Ka-Bar told me both 1085 and 1095 were used in Marine Corp
knives. The exact dates are lost in antiquity. 1085 makes a good blade.
Someone told me Studebaker truck spring was 1085. Some springs are 5160,
favored for big knives and swords.
Does anyone remember which well-known knife maker said his favorite
steel was "BTS" - boat trailer spring? There was a list somewhere that
listed the kind of steel used in the various makes & models of cars and
trucks, but unless you know, junkyard steel rules apply. Ron C

Yessir!
The higher the carbon, the fussier the alloy becomes however.
Overheating during forging, uneven heating, and the aggressiveness of
the quench , and proper tempering, matter more.
