Dave,

When you say that Vance Baker is gone, do you mean he is no longer on the 
list, or he is dead?

I don't remember hearing of his passing.

My guess -- and it is a guess is that they are 5160.  Very tough, will hold
a good edge and not likely to shatter.  Bush Hog blades are often 5160.
Much larger than these but they same kind of service.  (5160 is a typical
high service truck leaf spring steel.)

About 5 or 6 years ago, Vance Baker, now gone, got a large supply of the
5160 blades that he gave to the Folk School.  They had a dimensional error
in manufacture and were scraped, but nothing wrong with the steel.  Very
useful for tools.  An oil quenching steel.
