My aunt's (by marriage) father made white lightning from apples.  In 
Hungary it is not illegal to run a still... or at least it wasn't in the 
70s.  Anyhow, you uncork the bottle and put it to your nose and the most 
intense aroma of granny smith apples would greet you.  The first thought 
would be that this stuff is going to taste like candy.  Then you pour it 
out - colorless as distilled water.  Then you send it down - pure, 
unadulterated hellfire and not an apple to be seen or heard from within 
1000 miles.  That was my experience when I was visiting for Christmas in 
'74.  It would make any WV moonshiner proud.

And his grape wine... tasted almost like Welches, but it had a kick like 
a mule.
