the story I heard, which may or may not be true, is that he was using depleted uranium rounds after they had been shot at somebody, but missed.
When they hit, especially something like an armored vehicle, they turn to plasma and burn right thru the armor- but in the middle east, there are a fair amount of them just sitting around on the ground.

tungsten alloy of steel (steel with high percentage of tungsten) such as T1, 
the original High Speed Tool Steel.  I not sure how to find a higher 
performance material than S7, H11 or H13 for such uses.   T1 is 18 percent 
tungsten, has very heat resistance (as good as H13) good wear resistance 
(better that H13 or S7) but not near the shock resistance of S7.  S7 remains 
my first choice for such tooling,  YMMV.
