I found that to be true with respect to the city Fire Marshall. "Coal
forge? What's a coal forge?" But when I pointed out that the flue
could not possibly get as hot as a wood stove flue does, they agreed
to permit it on that basis and by those rules.
My garage shop is detached from the house, so there's not much worry
about setting the house on fire. However, I do store all significant
quantities of flammables in sheds out back. That includes paint
thinner, gasoline, kerosene, propane, etc. I may have some beeswax
and as much as a quart of linseed oil in the shop. Also small,
bernzomatic type gas cylinder. The shop is leaky enough that I don't
worry much about those.
