I have found that if you leave a light on, the varmints will get used to it. So you can see what is going on. I place the light so that when they look at the house they can't see, they are looking towards the light. Inexpensive claig light (clip on) from Home Depot. I also have a plywood window that I slide into the bedroom window at bedtime(screen is out and keeps my cats inside). It has a hinged opening (6"x6") for shooting. Beasts will hear a window open easily. But the small opening with a box hinge doesn't make any sound when opened. Rifle Scope works fine also. Scoops up the light and enhances the view.
Another off topic, Tractor Supply Company has an electric mouse/rat trap. Works great. Bunches of trappings per battery set. Blinks when something is caught, just pick it up and sling the offender out into the woods. No mess, quick, relatively merciful.

Wow!!
We had one land in our dead tree last week for the first time...BIG!

Black! Gee. When the big kitty comes into the neighborhood around here, the coyoters vanish one by one and don't return for a couple of years.
