[TheForge] Benches

I mounted some post vises on metal supports. The smaller one used 3/8" plate and an H beam for the upright. The larger used 1/2" plate butt welded to cover a 2 x 3 ft (or so) area. We punched holes in the corners for stakes to anchor the stand. Basically, you have a large plate on the floor or ground. The H beam is welded vertically to the plate and a smaller plate is welded to the top at the proper vertical distance for your vise. Your vise mounts on the smaller plate. You can weld studs onto the smaller plate and then bolt down the vise. I would not advise welding the vise directly to the stand, however. I used a short piece of pipe welded to the lower plate to hold the end of the post or leg. The larger stand weighs about 200 + lbs.

They work real well.

Subject: [TheForge] Benches

I need to build a bench to mount the leg vices on, and probably an engineers
vice as well. Question is, do I make it out of wood or metal? What do you
folks prefer?
Making a bench out of wood for beating hot metal near doesn't immediately
seem like the best idea :-)
