Is this really about "shingle rot" or is it about having an
unblemished roof?

Don't forget that if you salt the roof with copper, sooner or later
you're going to have green streaks somewhere.  As well, there's the
potential (although I'm too lazy to look up the details) for
electrochemical reaction between copper salts and zinc flashing or
galvanized gutters.

AFAICT, roofing has now embraced planned obsolescence. On our house,
roofing on one side -- 3-in-1, double-coverage -- put on in 1981 was
leaking dramatically in 2003.  On the other side of the roof we had
arrow-lock, singe-coverage put on circa 1950 that wasn't leaking at
all. I doubt a little lichen is going to make much difference, at least
not compared with that kind of decline in durability.
