Simple solution used down here in the south. Take a 6" wide x however long strip of galvanized metal and slide it up under the roof peak shingle and nail in place leaving about 1/4" exposed. Rain runs over, not unsightly and you're nailing where the top most shingle is nailed anyway. Keeps mold away and folks can't tell :)
