Bruce,

My old farm house has lightening rods with heavy copper ground straps. It 
seems to keep the lichen off as well as lightening.  Of course the ground 
straps are braded copper at least 1/2" in diameter. It would cost a lot to 
replace these days. A few years ago there was a scam where the travlers were 
convincing old people to replace them, the stuff they put up was real crap, 
while they walked away with all the copper.
