I havent seen the ones at timberline- but are you sure you dont want
woven mesh?
these guys, in Portland, near Timberline, make it

If you want to use real chain, I would recommend not using plated- not
so much for the poison gas issue, which I think will only occur from
welding it, but from the discoloration issue. It may get funky looking
as the plating gets hot on one side.
Its easy enough to sandblast it first, before installing, and then, if
you want, use a blackening solution- just toss the whole chain in a
bucket of the stuff. This would give you black chain.

I'm making a fireplace screen in the style of the ones at the
Timberline Lodge (strands of chain sandwiched and riveted at the top
to a frame and hanging loose), but I'm debating if plated chain is
safe to expose to the heat from a fireplace without it getting
converted to poisonous gas. Should I be hunting for stainless steel
chain (hard to find and expensive) or find and treat uncoated chain
with something (unplated chain is also tough to find)?
