[TheForge] Fireplace chain

I'm making a fireplace screen in the style of the ones at the  
Timberline Lodge (strands of chain sandwiched and riveted at the top  
to a frame and hanging loose), but I'm debating if plated chain is  
safe to expose to the heat from a fireplace without it getting  
converted to poisonous gas. Should I be hunting for stainless steel  
chain (hard to find and expensive) or find and treat uncoated chain  
with something (unplated chain is also tough to find)?
