The bellows I made and one of the refurbished originals had 5/4 wood. The original one we are now using at our North Augusta forge is only 3/4 and works fine. It was easier to hit good wood on the thicker wood paddles as the originals had been redone several times. I did some nail hole refilling prior to redoing the set from Camden, SC.
As someone said, I coated my canvas with a linseed oil/beeswax solution that has worked very well.
