I don't think that a dog bowl heater would generate enough heat for 25-30
gal. Not that familular with block heaters.

I've heard of using engine block heaters and dog bowl heaters... But then
again with all the global warming I can't imagine why they would be needed.

Mark,
Mine's a wine barrrel cut in half. It actually froze two weeks ago, and I
emptied it. I had to go to the dentist today, so I stopped in the farm
store and got the heater. I've never had ice break a barrel, but I always
empty them as soon as the surface freezes. Over the years I've had several
plastic buckets freeze and break, if I leave them over the weekend and
forgot to empty on Friday. One of the problems with emptying the barrel in
the winter, is it dries out and I have to resoak it in the spring or it
won't hold water. I know a guy that runs a cooperage, I asked him if they
have to soak new barrels. He said no, they are tight enough when new to not
leak. But after they have been used the wood shrinks and has to be soaked to
swell up and seal. If they took used barrels back to the cooperage and
tightened the bands with their big press, you may not have to soak, but that
would be a lot of extra work.

Bob,

While my shop gets cold enough to freeze water and then some, I just let my
slack tub freeze. I've got a stainless steel former beer keg with the top
cut out as a slack tub. Let me know how the heater works.

We've had unusually cold weather lately. 3 inches of snow today with low
temps in the teens and wind chills in single digits. The shore usually has a
milder climate.

I finally broke down and got a tank heater for my half barrel. Usually this
time of the year I empty the barrel and work out of a 5 gal. bucket which I
would dump every couple days when it was cold. At the black friday
hammer-in I noticed our host had a tank heater, and asked if it was
expensive to run. He said that he could hardly tell the difference. I have
my shop on it's own meter so I'll have a pretty good idea if it is costing
me a lot more.
