[TheForge] Fw: Anvil repair

I got the opportunity to certify and use the Cadweld system last year
while working on the steam generator repalacemant project at San Onofre
Nuclear Generating Station. It's a neat way to splice big bars, with lots
of fire and smoke and molten metal, but the splicing of big bars with
deformations is about the extent of its usefulness. The inclusion of "weld"
in it's name is a bit of a misnomer, as the process uses an outer sleeve
that overlaps both sides of the butt joint (for #18 bars, the sleeves were
maybe 10-12" long) and has ridged deformations going circumferentially
around the interior of the sleeve, using a special crucible and pouring
appliance, cadweld powder is touched off, burns, melts and flows into the
void between the rebar and sleeve (the ends of the sleeve are sealed
(hopefully) with ceramic fiber rope packing held in place by collars). The
finished product is nothing more than a mechanical interference-fit joint
held together by the poured metal locking in to the deformations on the
rebar and the inside of the sleeve...more on that here:

I understand that Cadweld has other products for welding on ground straps
and the like, but haven't used them, but the stuff I've seen is generally
copper bonded to steel...not sure on the particulars.
George.
